  • Salimullah Khan urges analysis beyond state narrative to understand the early stages of the Liberation War

Professor Salimullah Khan has emphasized the need for a multidimensional analysis of the early stages of the Liberation War, going beyond accurate historical studies and state narratives. He said that the ‘Operation Searchlight’ of March 25, 1971, was a well-planned repression by the Pakistani military junta, which accelerated the armed resistance of the Bengalis and the Liberation War.

He made these remarks while delivering the keynote address at a seminar titled ‘Operation Searchlight and the Beginning of Bangladesh’s Liberation War: In Search of Authentic Historical Narratives’ at the central auditorium of Jagannath University on Monday.

Salimullah Khan emphasized the use of political-historical context, eyewitness accounts and contemporary documents to understand the history of the Liberation War. He noted that although this massacre amounted to genocide under international law, its full documentation is still necessary. He called for raising new questions and data-based research in search of the truth.

At the seminar, Jagannath University Vice Chancellor Professor Raish Uddin said that even after 56 years of independence, the true and accurate history of the Liberation War in Bangladesh has not yet been written, which is a big shame for the nation. He expressed regret and said that it has not yet been possible to determine the exact number of martyrs in the Liberation War or the complete list of martyred intellectuals. He called for freedom from the tendency to distort history to convey the correct history to future generations.

The event was chaired by the university’s research director, Professor Imranul Haque, and moderated by Md. Anisur Rahman, a teacher from the Department of Islamic History and Culture. Teachers, students and researchers from various departments of the university participated in the seminar.

  • Merz announced his intention to launch a thermonuclear reactor in Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced plans to launch a nuclear fusion reactor, RIA Novosti reported .

During his visit to the Hanover Fair, Merz said that the federal government had not only included fusion energy as a key technology in its high-tech development program, but had also set itself the ambitious goal of launching Germany’s first fusion reactor.

While touring the exhibition stands, the Chancellor reviewed the key components of the future facility, including tritium production technologies. He confirmed that German authorities plan to build nuclear fusion power plants in the long term, asserting that the country is already among the “absolute global elite” in this field of research.

In January, Merz stated that Germany’s decision to abandon nuclear energy was a serious strategic mistake that needed to be corrected. He claimed that Germany’s energy transition had become the most expensive of any country in the world.

In June 2025, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics reported that German scientists had taken a major step toward creating a clean and virtually unlimited energy source—nuclear fusion. The Wendelstein 7-X facility, located in Greifswald, set a world record for the longest duration of hot plasma confinement—the primary fuel for fusion.

  • Turkey’s president said he is personally overseeing the investigation into school shootings

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he has taken personal control of the investigation into armed attacks on schools in the country, RIA Novosti reports .

“As president, I’ve been monitoring the situation since day one. And I continue to do so,” he said.

The Turkish leader also criticized those who launched a campaign against the authorities over these incidents.

A school in the city of Siverek was attacked on April 14. A young man armed with a gun opened fire indiscriminately, first in front of the building and then inside. He later barricaded himself inside the school, taking several students hostage. According to media reports, at least 16 people were injured in the incident. The attacker himself did not survive.

The following day, on April 15, a similar attack on a school in Kahramanmaraş left four people dead, including a teacher, and 20 others injured. The attacker was a 16-year-old eighth-grade student, the son of a former police officer.

Turkey previously introduced censorship of publications following the school shooting.

  • Rosobrnadzor explained the importance of the Unified State Exam using the film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” as an example

Corruption in university admissions was the main problem the Unified State Exam was intended to address when it was introduced 25 years ago, according to Anzor Muzaev, head of Rosobrnadzor , in an interview with Vedomosti .

According to him, the lack of transparency in the selection process and the disparate rules by which each university set its own requirements were the main reasons for the creation of a unified knowledge assessment system.

“When citizens criticize the Unified State Exam, they forget why it was created,” the official noted.

He recalled the situation that developed during the Soviet era, described in the film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears,” in which the heroine was unable to enter a university and therefore chose a different path in life.

As Muzaev explained, in the 1990s, with weak government oversight, applicants from remote regions or villages who had not studied with university tutors had virtually no chance of entering a federal university, let alone a prestigious one.

Applicants were able to apply to a maximum of one or two universities if they were located nearby and their exam schedules overlapped. Students took their final exams in June and three or four entrance exams at each university in July, and the requirements for the same subjects varied, the head of Rosobrnadzor recalled.

  • Rescuers have resumed the search for the Usoltsevs to determine how they will proceed

The renewed search for the Usoltsevs in Krasnoyarsk Krai is not in an active phase, according to 360.ru , citing Serafima Chooda, a volunteer with the LizaAlert team in the region.

According to her, we are talking about slightly different tasks.

“The visit is not a resumption of the active search phase. It’s necessary to determine the future scope of the work,” she said.

In addition, drones were launched on site to test whether they would be effective for surveying the area.

The Usoltsev family, consisting of parents and a five-year-old child, went on a trip to the Krasnoyarsk Territory last September. During the trip, everyone lost contact, prompting a massive search.

However, their active phase had no effect, and the family has still not been found.

What exactly happened to them is unknown. Since the search was interrupted during the winter, traces of the travelers may have disappeared during the cold months.
