Former BNP leader causes ruckus at school function after not receiving invitation

A commotion broke out at a farewell ceremony for SSC candidates at a school in Sreepur, Gazipur. A former local BNP leader has been accused of indecent behavior, snatching the microphone and locking the headmaster’s room. A video of the incident has gone viral on Facebook.

It was learned that the incident took place at around 12 noon on Sunday in the premises of Banshbari High School in Sreepur Upazila. Due to the commotion, the students were in a panic and the program was stopped at one stage. Later, the matter was resolved locally and the lock of the headmaster’s room was unlocked. After that, the program was briefly concluded in about an hour.

Regarding this, the school’s headmaster Sanowar Uddin said, “During the farewell ceremony, Sarwar Awal, former general secretary of BNP Ward No. 1 of Gazipur Union of the upazila, and his people suddenly arrived. He started abusing the event as soon as he arrived. At one stage, 10-15 more people joined Awal. They suddenly took away the microphone from the headmaster’s hand. Within a short time, they locked the headmaster’s room.”

The headmaster also said that Awal and his people created such a situation by giving a verbal invitation instead of a written one. The matter was later resolved locally.

However, Sarwar Awal denied the allegations, saying he did not abuse anyone and went there at the request of his parents.

The parents asked the headmaster about charging extra money for the admit card. He denied his involvement in the incident of locking the room and said that he did not know who locked it; however, the lock was unlocked within a short time.

Enamul Haque, convener of Gazipur Union BNP, said that the incident has come to his attention and that a decision will be taken at a meeting on Monday afternoon.
