The Election Commission (EC) does not want to rush the country’s 23rd presidential election. The constitutional body wants to decide on the election schedule and further process after discussions between the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and the Speaker of the National Assembly.
President Md. Shahabuddin resigned on Friday (July 24), almost two years before completing his term. He submitted his resignation to the Speaker.
The Speaker then takes over as Acting President. The Speaker will hold this position until the next President assumes office.
Senior Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Machud told Banglanews on Saturday, “He resigned on the day of the closure. The office reopens on Sunday (July 26).
“So we don’t want to do anything without discussion. There will be a meeting with the Speaker and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Then the decision will be final.”
