The rapid decline in the cost of solar panel components, aggressive policy initiatives in various states, and high electricity prices have led to the installation of solar panels on the roofs of countless homes. The benefits of that decision made many years ago are now clearly being felt by the people of this region.
The Times of India reported that a new report by the Acadia Center found that rooftop and other decentralized solar power projects generated more than 6 gigawatts of electricity during the heat wave that lasted from June 28 to July 4, 2026 in New England, saving electricity consumers a combined $130 to $149 million.
The report also said that on July 2 alone, solar power systems saved $39 to $54 million. That afternoon, solar power supplied more electricity to the grid than the combined output of New England’s nuclear power plants.
Acadia Center analysis found that rooftop solar power met about 25 percent of the region’s total electricity demand at certain times.
“The grid readily accepts this electricity,” said Jamie Dickerson, senior director of the Acadia Center’s climate and clean energy program. “As a result, other power plants don’t have to burn fuel at that time. This saves customers money by not having to buy expensive energy from other sources.”
“On the hottest day of July 2, between 2pm and 7pm, decentralized solar power contributed more to the region’s energy mix than nuclear power plants. In fact, solar power saved 28 to 43 percent of the daily electricity generation costs on that day,” he said.
