hittagong: The worst floods in recorded history have caused immense suffering in Satkania and Banshkhali. Amidst this, the coffin of Mohammad Forkan, which was floated on a raft for burial, has gone viral.
Since the family cemetery was submerged up to the waist in water, they built a raft in the Ban River and placed the coffin on it, and took it to a higher ground 300 meters away. Then they traveled another two kilometers by autorickshaw.
Then the burial.
The incident took place in Janar’s Kenochia Union on Friday (July 10).
According to local sources, Forkan was fishing with a net in the floodwaters on Friday morning when he suddenly felt sick.
He then died at home, but the family cemetery was submerged, so burial was not possible.
The funeral prayer was held at around 10pm at the Fakir Mura Eidgah area. Later, Forkan was buried in a special place on the hill. His eldest son Hafez Rashedul Islam led the prayer.
Md. Forkan’s son Russell Uddin said, there is a family graveyard next to the house. My grandparents and other family elders are buried there. My father also used to say that he should be buried next to his grandparents. But due to the flood, it was not possible to fulfill his father’s wish.
