Drug dealer sentenced to 7 years in prison for concealing assets worth Tk 6.5 million

A court in Chittagong has sentenced a man to seven years in prison for illegally acquiring wealth and concealing information in his asset declaration. He was also fined Tk 2.26 crore. Judge Mizanur Rahman of the Chittagong Divisional Special Judge’s Court delivered the verdict on Monday.

The convicted person is named Rupam Chowdhury (41). He is the son of Dayal Chowdhury of Sarwatoli area of ​​Boalkhali upazila. However, he had been living in Madhyam Nathpara area of ​​Halishahar police station in the city.

ACC lawyer Mokarram Hossain confirmed the verdict to Prothom Alo. He said that accused Rupam Chowdhury has been sentenced to 7 years in prison after allegations of acquiring illegal wealth through drugs and concealing information in his asset declaration were proven. He was also fined Tk 2.26 crore 58 thousand 660.

According to court sources, Rupam Chowdhury has concealed information about assets worth 65 lakh 6 thousand 830 taka in the asset declaration submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Of this, immovable assets are worth 38 lakh 23 thousand 439 taka and immovable assets are worth 26 lakh 83 thousand 391 taka. In addition, evidence is found against Rupam of illegally acquiring assets worth 1 crore 61 lakh 51 thousand 830 taka, which is inconsistent with his known source of income. After investigating the case filed in this incident, the ACC filed a charge sheet against him in the court. Then, after taking testimony, the court gave its verdict.
