The highest number of microfinance institutions were deregistered during Yunus’s tenure

As part of its zero-tolerance policy against irregularities, the Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA) cancels the licenses of microfinance institutions. Statistics show that in the last one and a half decades, the most number of licenses of microfinance institutions were cancelled during the tenure of the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

In that 18-month period, the MRA canceled the registration of a total of 57 microfinance institutions.
Among these, 2025 saw the highest number of NGO registrations cancelled in a single year in the country’s history.

That year, the MRA canceled the registration of 48 NGOs.
At this time, the head of the interim government was Dr. Yunus, a pioneer of microfinance.

While he was the chief advisor to the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus granted tax exemption to the Grameen Bank he founded until 2029. The Board of Revenue had a tax claim of more than Tk 6 billion from Grameen Bank during the Awami League government.
Soon after Dr. Yunus took office, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a notification exempting Grameen Bank from tax. The notification, issued on October 10, 2024, stated that all income earned by Grameen Bank for the next five years was exempted from paying income tax.
