Dhaka: The Election Commission (EC) has published the gazette notification of the election of BNP candidate Sarwar Alamgir from Chittagong-2 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election on a court order. Additional copies of the gazette have already been sent to BG Press for printing.
The commission decided to publish the gazette notification in the afternoon after the court ordered the publication of Sarwar Alamgir’s gazette notification on Thursday (July 9) morning. The gazette notification signed by EC Deputy Secretary Mohammad Monir Hossain was then sent to BG Press for printing.
Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Machud said, “We took the decision quickly after the court order.”
EC officials said that the law states that the letter should be sent to Parliament as soon as possible after the gazette is published, because the oath has to be taken by the Speaker within three days of the gazette being published.
On the day of the 13th National Parliament election, the EC held polling in Chittagong-2 constituency, but the EC refrained from publishing the results in the gazette on a court order. Sarwar Alamgir was accused of defaulting on loans.
After a legal battle, Sarwar Alamgir received a court ruling that his nomination papers were valid, removing the obstacles to his election and taking the oath of office.
Meanwhile, after the gazette was published, the National Parliament Secretariat said that newly elected MP Sarwar Alamgir will take the oath at 7 pm on Thursday.
