Bangladesh on the path to an investment-based economy, not a debt-based one

Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has expressed his determination to put Bangladesh on a strong foundation by reforming the fragile economy and plundered financial sector left behind by a decade and a half of fascist rule . He announced that Bangladesh has now started its journey from a debt-based economy to an investment-based economy.

At the same time, he reiterated strict measures to bring back laundered money and control inflation.
The Finance Minister made these remarks in the closing remarks of the general debate on the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament on Monday (June 29).

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram presided over the session.
The Finance Minister said, ‘This budget is not just the government’s annual financial statement; it is a blueprint for building a prosperous Bangladesh through bringing relief to public life, economic recovery, structural reforms, and establishing social justice.

He noted that even if we inherit a devastated economy, it will be possible to overcome this crisis quickly through the current government’s 3R (Recovery, Restoration, Reconstruction) strategy.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury answered many doubts about the target of 7.5 percent inflation and 6.5 percent growth in the proposed budget.

He said, “We have taken the fight against inflation not only as an economic program but also as a social responsibility. Money supply is being controlled through coordination of monetary policy and fiscal policy. In addition, prices of daily commodities are being brought under control by reducing taxes at the source on 60 products and eliminating defects in the supply system.”
