Bangladesh Police has urged citizens to be vigilant against scams on social media claiming money and lobbying using the names and identities of various government officials, including the police.
The call was made in a warning sent from the police headquarters on Tuesday (July 28).
The warning states that recently, a fraud ring has been sending messages on social media using the names, photos and identities of responsible and senior officials of various government departments, including the police, demanding money. It is also trying to lobby in various ways. In these incidents, on the one hand, ordinary people are being financially cheated, and on the other hand, the reputation of government institutions and responsible officials is being tarnished.
Police Headquarters said that just because a government official’s photo or identity has been used on social media, there is no way to assume that the ID or mobile number is his. Therefore, everyone has been requested not to respond to such messages or requests in any way.
If anyone receives such a fraudulent message, the police have advised them to contact the national emergency service number 999 or the CID’s Cyber Police Center and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Intelligence Division (DB) office.
Bangladesh Police said that law enforcement agencies are on high alert against such fraudulent groups. The warning also stated that appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved in the fraud after identifying them.
