The identities of the five people killed in a horrific collision between a passenger bus and an overturned egg-laden truck in the Swadi area of the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur have been revealed. All of them are residents of the Suadi area of Algi union in Bhanga upazila.
The accident occurred around 7:30 pm on Saturday (July 11).
The deceased were identified as Arif Matubbar (25), Obaidul Sheikh (40), Joynal Mia (24), Nurun Nabi Sheikh (12) and Hafizur Rahman (50).
According to police and local sources, an egg-laden truck lost control and overturned on the highway. Later, local people and police from the Bhanga Highway Police Station were working to recover the truck and remove the eggs and goods scattered on the road.
At that time, a Khulna-bound passenger bus came at a high speed and hit the overturned truck and the rescue workers from behind, killing four people on the spot.
The seriously injured were rescued and taken to the Bhanga Upazila Health Complex, where another person died while undergoing treatment.
Bhanga Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Tansiv Zubair Nadim said that one person died after being brought to the hospital. Some of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving advanced medical treatment.
Bhanga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Helal Uddin said, “Five people have been confirmed dead. The injured were rushed to the hospital after the accident. In addition, the vehicles involved in the accident have been removed and traffic on the highway has been normalized.”
