Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to Beijing has proposed the formation of a new economic corridor involving China. If implemented, this initiative could bring about major changes in the geopolitical map of South Asia and Southeast Asia.
However, while the project may open up economic opportunities, it has also brought about various challenges.
Why did China make this proposal?
China’s main goal is to directly connect its southwestern region, especially Yunnan province, to the Bay of Bengal.
Currently, most of China’s maritime trade depends on the Strait of Malacca, which could become vulnerable in the event of a conflict or blockade.
That’s why Beijing has been trying to build alternative corridors for years, including Myanmar’s Kyaukpyu deep-sea port, oil and gas pipelines, and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
Now, if Bangladesh is included, China can gain direct access to the Bay of Bengal using the ports of Chittagong and Mongla.
