Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has challenged the National Assembly to present evidence of corruption allegations raised during the interim government. At the same time, he said that he came to the parliament elected by the people, not as anyone’s ‘younger brother’.
He made these remarks while participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address in the National Assembly session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Tuesday (April 28).
Earlier in the same session, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid, in her speech, accused young advisors of corruption in the interim government and referred to young members of parliament, including Nahid Islam, as ‘younger brothers’.The opposition chief whip gave a strong response to this.
While responding to the corruption allegations, Nahid Islam drew the attention of the Speaker and said that the speech mentioned allegations of corruption during the interim government.I was in this interim government, I was in the role of advisor for some time. There were one or two others, our current Honorable Foreign Minister was also there, there was the Attorney General.I resigned long before the election. Now that he has raised the corruption allegations, he is the one in the government, he will have to prove it.
Demanding proof from the government, he further said, “I have asked the National Assembly to provide proof of this, they will have to provide this proof. What corruption allegations have been made against Nahid Islam, where has Nahid Islam committed corruption – Honorable Speaker, I am asking them for that proof.”
Reminding the members of parliament of their dignity and rights, the 28-year-old young politician said, “Everyone here has been elected by the people. Everyone is an elected representative. Yes, I am 28, today is my birthday.” At that time, the members present in the parliament clapped their hands and wished him a happy birthday.
