The buildup of nuclear forces by Britain and France is leading to an escalating nuclear arms race, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated , according to RIA Novosti .
According to him, this is inconsistent with the goals of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). He added that Paris is talking about plans to become “an aid to NATO’s joint nuclear missions.” Grushko also pointed to the UK’s buildup of nuclear capabilities .
“This in itself leads to an escalation of the arms race, which not only does not correspond to the goals of the NPT, but also directly contradicts the direct obligations under this treaty,” the diplomat said.
Earlier, Natalia Nikonorova, deputy head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, stated that strikes on Iran could lead to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
